In an inspiring display of student innovation and sustainable engineering, IIT Madras has unveiled its solar-powered car ‘Aagneya’, which is set to participate in the prestigious Bridgestone World Solar Challenge 2025 in Australia. Scheduled to take place from August 24 to 31, the international race will push Aagneya to its limits as it travels 3,000 km from Darwin to Adelaide, battling extreme temperatures and high-speed crosswinds.
Engineered for the Extreme
Developed by Team Agnirath, a 38-member student group from the Centre for Innovation (CFI) at IIT Madras, Aagneya stands as a testament to next-gen engineering. Crafted over 15,000 hours of meticulous work, the vehicle is equipped with a carbon fibre body for ultra-lightweight durability and a machine learning-based strategy module that enables the car to adapt to dynamic real-world challenges like:
Scorching heat exceeding 50°C
Strong crosswinds over 60 km/h
Variable terrain and sunlight intensity
This strategic module analyzes weather patterns, terrain data, and solar input to make real-time driving and energy optimization decisions, showcasing the future of AI-integrated mobility.
A Vision Backed by Passion and Purpose
The solar car was officially unveiled on Friday by IIT Madras Director Prof. V Kamakoti, who lauded the team’s dedication and ingenuity. Speaking at the launch, he emphasized the importance of alumni and industry support to take such innovations to the next level, both in global competitions and real-world applications.
“This project embodies the spirit of innovation and sustainability. With the right support, initiatives like these can help India lead in the clean-tech revolution,” Prof. Kamakoti said.
More Than Just a Race
The Bridgestone World Solar Challenge is not just a race—it's a global platform that encourages young engineers to build solar-powered vehicles that could redefine the future of transportation. For IIT Madras, Aagneya isn’t just a car—it’s a symbol of youth-driven progress, fusing green energy, artificial intelligence, and automotive excellence.
As the countdown to the challenge begins, all eyes will be on Team Agnirath as they prepare to take on the Australian outback with nothing but sunlight and sheer determination.
