Actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay, president of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has once again shown a grounded and measured approach in the public sphere. Speaking at a student felicitation ceremony in Chennai on Friday, Vijay humbly requested students not to compare him with former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj, a stalwart of Tamil Nadu politics known for his dedication to education and public service.
The event, organized by TVK, was held to honour Class 10 and 12 toppers from across the state. Around 300 students from 32 Assembly constituencies were felicitated with cash prizes and merit certificates as a gesture of encouragement and appreciation for their academic excellence.
A Request for Focus and Humility
Addressing the gathering, Vijay said,
“This is a small request—please don’t take it the wrong way. Let’s keep the speeches short and avoid political references. Instead, speak about your teachers, your school, or any other subject of your choice.”
He specifically asked that students refrain from using titles like “Ilaya Kamaraj” while referring to him—an allusion that some student speakers had previously used in admiration but which sparked criticism from various quarters.
Context Behind the Statement
Recently, certain groups had expressed concern over students comparing Vijay to K. Kamaraj, a beloved figure in Tamil Nadu history who played a pivotal role in shaping the state’s educational landscape. The controversy prompted Vijay to address the issue directly in a respectful and tactful manner, reinforcing his image as a leader who values humility, focus on education, and staying above political glorification.
More Than Just a Party Leader
By keeping the spotlight on the achievements of the students rather than himself or his political ambitions, Vijay ensured that the event remained a celebration of academic effort. His approach reflects a key value that he has consistently upheld—respect for legacy and a commitment to empowering youth.
In a political climate often dominated by self-promotion, Vijay’s words and actions have stood out for their restraint and sincerity—qualities that may well define the tone of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam in the coming years.
