Air India Warns of Flight Delays

Air India has initiated comprehensive safety inspections on its Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet in compliance with directives from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The move follows a tragic crash involving a 787 aircraft operating on the Ahmedabad–London route, which resulted in the loss of at least 265 lives. This incident marks the first fatal accident involving the Dreamliner since its commercial launch in 2011.

Why the Checks Are Happening

In response to the disaster and a series of recurring technical snags, the DGCA has mandated a one-time detailed inspection of all Boeing 787 aircraft powered by GenX engines. These checks are being conducted as each aircraft returns to India and before it is cleared for its next flight.

The DGCA’s enhanced safety protocols include the following:

  • Fuel parameter monitoring and system checks

  • Cabin air compressor inspections

  • Electronic engine control system tests

  • Engine fuel actuator and oil system evaluations

  • Hydraulic system serviceability checks

  • Review of aircraft take-off performance

  • Flight Control Inspection (to be added soon)

  • Power assurance checks (to be completed within two weeks)

These actions are designed to ensure the airworthiness of the Dreamliner fleet and prevent future incidents.

Impact on Flight Operations

Air India has acknowledged that the mandatory checks may lead to longer turnaround times and possible delays, particularly on long-haul routes and flights to destinations with airport curfews. The airline urges passengers to verify their flight status before heading to the airport.

“Customers will be duly notified about any delays,” said an Air India spokesperson. “We’re prioritizing safety while working to minimize inconvenience.”

So far, Air India has completed safety inspections on nine Dreamliner aircraft and is progressing toward completing the checks on the remaining 24 aircraft within the DGCA's stipulated timeline.

Support for Affected Passengers

To mitigate the inconvenience caused by operational delays, Air India is offering:

  • Full refunds for canceled flights

  • Free rescheduling for passengers who wish to change their travel plans

This customer-first approach reflects Air India’s commitment to balancing safety with passenger satisfaction.

DGCA’s Oversight and Review

The aviation regulator will closely monitor and review final inspection reports submitted by Air India as part of its overall assessment of the Dreamliner fleet’s safety. It also emphasized that any maintenance issues must be fully resolved before further flights.

Final Thoughts

While the temporary delays may frustrate some travelers, these inspections are a necessary step in ensuring the long-term safety and reliability of Air India’s fleet. The airline is working closely with regulators to meet the highest aviation safety standards, while also keeping customer needs in focus.
