A major infrastructure failure occurred late Wednesday night when a truck carrying liquor plunged into a massive crater formed on Gurugram’s Southern Peripheral Road, following intense rainfall in the region. The dramatic incident, which happened near Sector 74A, was captured on video and quickly went viral across social media platforms.

Road Collapses Amid Heavy Rainfall, Traffic Disrupted
The incident unfolded around 10:30 PM, as torrential rains lashed parts of Delhi-NCR, with Gurugram recording 133 mm of rainfall in 12 hours—including a staggering 103 mm within just 90 minutes, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The overloaded truck, which was transporting beer crates, crashed into a newly formed crater after a portion of the road gave way. The collapse caused major traffic disruptions, especially along the Southern Peripheral stretch that connects several key sectors.
Driver Escapes with Minor Injuries
Fortunately, the truck driver sustained only minor injuries and has provided his statement to local authorities. The overturned vehicle remained lodged in the pit by Thursday morning as emergency teams worked on site to assess damage and manage the road.
Poor Drainage, Sewage Work Suspected
Initial reports suggest that ongoing maintenance on underground sewage pipelines may have weakened the road structure. Combined with excessive water accumulation from heavy rains, the damaged base gave way, resulting in the road collapse.
Officials have ordered a detailed technical audit of the affected stretch. The results of the inspection report are awaited and could determine liability for the structural failure.
Widespread Waterlogging Brings Gurugram to a Halt
Beyond the crater incident, large swathes of Gurugram experienced waterlogging, leaving thousands of commuters stranded overnight. Critical roads like Basai, Golf Course Extension, Sheetla Mata Road, Rajiv Chowk, and Bus Adda Road were severely flooded.
At Subhash Chowk, water levels rose to nearly 2.5 feet, paralyzing traffic until 2:00 AM. Underpasses on the Narsinghpur stretch of the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway were also submerged, adding to the chaos.
Commuter Advisory Issued as Orange Alert Remains
The Gurugram Traffic Police issued advisories urging residents to work from home and avoid unnecessary travel due to prolonged congestion and road damage.
"Waterlogging has been reported at many places across Gurugram due to heavy rain since last night. Traffic jams with movement disruption may take more than usual time to commute," read a traffic police statement posted on X (formerly Twitter).
The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for Gurugram and nearby NCR regions, forecasting continued heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 24 to 48 hours.
Conclusion
The Gurugram road cave-in incident not only highlights the urgent need for robust urban drainage systems but also raises questions about the quality of road construction and monitoring during the monsoon season. With weather conditions expected to remain severe, residents are advised to stay updated with official alerts and take precautions.
