Slogans targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi were reportedly raised at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus following the Supreme Court’s decision to deny bail to activists Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots case.

The incident occurred near the Sabarmati Hostel area of the university. According to reports, the slogans were raised soon after the court order and included references that were described as threatening in nature. Members of student organisations were present at the site during the incident.
Supreme Court’s Decision
The Supreme Court declined to grant bail to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, citing the seriousness of the allegations and the existence of prima facie material suggesting their involvement in a larger conspiracy related to the Delhi violence. The case is being heard under provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
At the same time, the court granted bail to five other accused in the same case, noting that their roles were different and did not warrant continued custody at this stage.
Campus Reaction
JNU has long been known as a centre for political debate and student activism. The slogans raised after the verdict have once again brought attention to the campus, highlighting ongoing tensions surrounding issues of free expression, national security, and judicial processes.
